Water Work: Building Confidence and Technique in the Pond

There’s something truly magical about watching a gundog hit the water. Whether it’s the powerful, focused swim of a Labrador or the enthusiastic splash of a Spaniel, water work is often the highlight of a dog’s training journey. However, for many owners, it can also be the biggest hurdle.
If your dog is hesitant at the water’s edge or, conversely, so excited they lose all their manners the moment they see a splash, you aren’t alone. At The Gundog Coach, we believe that successful water work isn't about "making" the dog go in; it’s about building a partnership where your dog trusts you enough to dive into the unknown.
Whether you are looking for gundog training Kent locals can rely on or you’re joining us for online gundog training UK wide, perfecting the pond is all about technique, patience, and a bit of Kentish sunshine.
The Splash Factor: Why Water is Different
For a gundog, water changes everything. The scent behaves differently, their movement is restricted, and for some, the sensation of "losing their feet" can be genuinely daunting.
We often see labrador gundog training sessions where a dog is a superstar on land but becomes "water-shy" the moment they reach the bank. This usually happens when a dog has been pushed too fast or had a negative experience. Our philosophy of 'Ethical Training for Happy Gundogs' means we never force or throw a dog into the water. Instead, we build a desire to be there.
Building Confidence: Start Small, Think Shallow
The secret to a confident water dog isn't a deep lake; it’s a shallow puddle. If you have a young dog or a rescue who is unsure, we always recommend starting with very shallow entries.

Puddles and Streams: Use natural, shallow water where the dog can keep their feet on the ground.
Positive Associations: Use high-value rewards or a favourite toy to encourage them to explore the edge.
Walk In Together: If the entry is safe and gently sloping, sometimes just walking in yourself (wellies on!) is enough to show your dog that the "water monster" isn't so scary.
Once your dog is happily "paddling," you can gradually move to water where they have to swim a stroke or two. By keeping the sessions short and successful, you build a dog that views water as a playground rather than a problem.
Partnership over Power: The Trust Connection
In our 1 to 1 gundog training sessions, we focus heavily on the bond between you and your dog. When you ask a dog to swim out into a pond for a dummy, you are asking them to trust your judgment.
If you send them for a retrieve they can't find, or if the bank is too steep for them to climb back out easily, that trust begins to erode. 'Partnership over Power' means choosing the right environments and the right tasks so your dog knows they will always be successful when they follow your lead. This confidence is what creates that "steely" focus you see in top-tier gundogs.
Technique Tips: Handling "The Shake"
It’s the classic gundog scenario: your dog swims out, picks the dummy beautifully, swims back, climbs onto the bank, and immediately drops the dummy to give themselves a massive shake: soaking you in the process!
While the "wet dog shake" is natural, in a fieldwork or competition setting, we want the dog to deliver to hand first. Here’s how to handle it:
Meet Them at the Edge: As your dog exits the water, move toward them to encourage a quick delivery.
The Delivery First: Use your "give" cue immediately. Once the dummy is safely in your hand, then you can give them a specific "shake" cue or just let them get on with it.
Use Floating Dummies: For consistent practice, you need the right gear. Our 1lb Canvas Training Dummies are perfect for this, as they are easy for the dog to grip even when wet.

For younger dogs or those just starting, our Junior Puppy Dummy is a great lightweight option to ensure they don't feel weighed down while learning to navigate the water.
The Holy Grail: Water Steadiness
Steadiness is the hallmark of a well-trained gundog. It’s one thing to stay sitting when a dummy is thrown on grass; it’s quite another to stay still when it hits the water with a tempting ker-plosh.
To build water steadiness:
Keep it Simple: Start by sitting your dog at the water's edge. Throw a dummy in, but don't send them. Walk out (if shallow) or use a second dummy to "pick it up" yourself.
Delayed Sends: Gradually increase the time between the splash and your command to "go."
Memory Retrieves: Place a dummy in the water when the dog isn't looking, walk them to the bank, and then send them. This removes the "excitement" of the splash and focuses on the work.

Great Kent Locations for Water Work
As a gundog trainer based in the Garden of England, I’m often asked where to practice. If you are near Folkestone or Dover, look for spots with:
Gently sloping banks: Essential for safety and confidence.
Minimal current: Avoid fast-flowing rivers or the open sea for early training.
Quiet surroundings: Try to avoid busy public "dog swimming" spots where other dogs might interfere with your training.
Areas around the Romney Marsh or some of the quieter public footpaths near the Stour can offer great little streams and ponds. Just remember to always check for local signage and ensure you have permission if you're on private land!
Gear Up for Success
You can’t do water work without the right kit. We highly recommend using dedicated training aids that won't sink or become waterlogged and heavy.

The Duck-Shaped Training Dummy (similar to our canvas range) is a fantastic tool for simulating real-world scenarios. Its realistic shape and weight help your dog get used to the "feel" of a retrieve, making the transition to the field much smoother.
