Our philosophy
Our focus is on training you as the handler and empowering you to develop your dog through a strong partnership based on trust, fun and the strongest bond.
We do not use rigid labels because every dog is an individual. Our philosophy is to keep training enjoyable and help dogs achieve success through positive experiences.
We teach boundaries through the lens of actions and consequences, and we do not tolerate harsh handling.
Handler-first coaching
Our job is not simply to take the lead and show what the dog can do. We coach the handler so the learning continues clearly and fairly after the lesson has ended.
That matters for welfare as much as progress. When the person understands timing, reward placement, body language and realistic criteria, the dog gets a calmer learning picture and fewer mixed messages.
Our story
The Gundog Coach is based in Kent and brings over 18 years of hands-on experience in breeding, training and working Labradors and Spaniels.
The work exists because good coaching protects the dog as much as it supports the handler. When owners understand timing, communication and how to practise between sessions, the dog's confidence and welfare are better protected.
James
James has owned, trained and worked Labradors and Spaniels for over 18 years. He is an award-winning gundog photographer, a qualified shotgun coach and holds a Level 3 certificate in adult vocational learning.
Maddi
Maddi has spent much of her career as a professional equestrian coach, has bred, owned, trained and worked gundogs for over 18 years, holds a Level 3 UK Coaching Certificate and is studying a Masters in Sports Coaching.
Method
We break skills down so dogs can succeed, teach voice, whistle and hand-signal communication, and adapt the training to the dog's personality and the handler's goals.

The Gundog Coach approach comes from living with, training and working gundogs over many years, not from a one-size-fits-all class script.
Whether the goal is field work, better control on walks, confidence or a happier relationship at home, the focus stays the same: clear communication, kind methods and practical training that owners can repeat.
