Reliable gundog work starts with the handler understanding how the dog learns. When the criteria are clear and the reward is meaningful, the dog can make confident choices instead of guessing.
Keep the steps small
Most training problems appear when the exercise becomes too difficult too quickly. Reduce distance, reduce distraction, simplify the retrieve or return to a place where the dog can succeed.
This is the heart of success-based training: build the behaviour in layers, then add challenge only when the previous layer is settled.
Know what to practise next
For spaniel training: mastering the hunt without losing control, the handler should finish each session knowing the next repeatable exercise, the standard they are looking for and when to stop.
